January has come and gone, and with it, the novelty of a fresh start might be fading. How are you feeling about your goals and intentions for 2025?
I’ve always loved the sense of possibility that January and September bring. These two seasons—January with its promise of renewal and September with its back-to-school rhythm—have always marked moments of mental reset for me. They carry an invitation to reflect, realign, and reimagine what’s possible.
But as the rhythm of everyday life returns, it’s easy to find yourself stuck in familiar patterns, facing the same challenges, and replaying the same inner scripts. If that’s where you are right now, I want to encourage you: don’t settle.
Growth doesn’t always require a radical move—a new job, a promotion, or a major separation. Sometimes, it’s about taking small, intentional steps forward. Whether you’re considering a career change, exploring a leadership transition, stepping away from a toxic relationship, or seeking alignment in your current situation, there’s always room to refine how you live and work in line with what truly matters to you.
The Power of Forward Movement
Not all challenges require a dramatic change in direction. Often, the real breakthrough comes from shifting your perspective, developing new skills, or addressing what’s holding you back. Progress—whether it’s pruning what no longer serves you or leaning into growth where you are—is key.
I’ve been on both sides of this journey. At times, I’ve had to step away from roles that no longer aligned with my values and aspirations. At other moments, I’ve realised that growth didn’t require leaving but instead pausing, reframing, and recommitting to my current path. Both required reflection, courage, and intentional action.
Take, for instance, my pivot from a social impact/CSR career to coaching. On the surface, it might seem like a bold leap. But in reality, the transition was years in the making. The leadership programs I designed, the mentoring relationships I nurtured, and the ways I supported colleagues and friends in aligning their work with their values were all signs pointing toward coaching long before I recognised it.
That transition taught me an invaluable lesson: true growth isn’t always about seeking something new. Sometimes, it’s about seeing the connections in what you already do, refining your focus, and stepping into alignment with your purpose with clarity and courage.
When It’s Time for Change
Dr. Henry Cloud’s “Necessary Endings” offers profound insights into recognising when it’s time to let go. Knowing when to move on begins with honest evaluation and the courage to make purposeful decisions.
1. A Lack of Alignment with Your Values
When your current role, relationships, or commitments no longer reflect who you are or what matters most to you, it might be time to make a change. Misalignment leads to a sense of disconnection, draining your energy and enthusiasm.
Ask yourself: Are the goals I’m pursuing aligned with the person I want to be? If not, what needs to change for me to feel more congruent with my values?
2. Repeated Failure to Meet Realistic Expectations
If you’re consistently falling short of achievable goals despite genuine effort, it might be a sign that the situation isn’t a good fit. This doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it could mean the environment isn’t conducive to your growth.
Cloud reminds us that recognising these patterns is not about giving up but about choosing to direct your energy where it can be most fruitful.
3. An Inability to See Meaningful Progress Despite Effort
We all encounter periods of slow progress, but if your efforts feel fruitless over an extended period, it may be time to evaluate whether you’re in the right place. This is especially true if you’ve tried multiple strategies and sought support without seeing improvement.
What is the cost of staying in a place of stagnation? Sometimes, letting go allows new opportunities to emerge.
4. A Toxic Environment Affecting Your Health
Toxic environments—whether at work or in relationships—take a toll on your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. If your environment is harming your ability to thrive, no amount of reframing or resilience will compensate for its impact.
Prioritising your health and well-being is not selfish; it’s essential for living a purposeful and fulfilling life. Recognising and exiting a toxic space is one of the most empowering decisions you can make.
10 Tips for Navigating Change and Transitions
Whether you’re ready to move on or still evaluating your next steps, navigating transitions requires intention and courage. Here are 10 practical tips to help you move forward:
1. Anchor in Your Values.
Define what truly matters to you. Use your values as a compass for every decision.
2. Reflect and Prune What’s Not Working.
Regularly evaluate your life and work. Identify what’s draining your energy or misaligned with your goals and let it go.
3. Choose Courage Over Fear.
Change often feels uncomfortable, but fear should never be the reason you stay stagnant. Trust that forward movement, even in small steps, will lead to growth.
4. Embrace the Wilderness.
Transitions are often marked by uncertainty. Lean into the unknown with curiosity and faith—it’s where possibilities are born.
5. Invest in Self-Development.
Upskill or seek learning opportunities that prepare you for your next chapter. Growth flourishes when you’re intentional about your personal development.
6. Build Your Support Network.
Surround yourself with people who inspire, challenge, and believe in your potential. A strong network can provide perspective, encouragement, and accountability.
7. Prioritise Self-Care.
Change is demanding. To navigate it well, nurture your mental, emotional, and physical health. Rest and resilience go hand in hand.
8. Reimagine Failure.
Failure isn’t the end—it’s a lesson. Use setbacks as opportunities to refine your approach and grow stronger.
9. Seek Guidance.
Work with a coach, mentor, or trusted advisor to gain clarity and direction. Collaborating with someone who has your best interests at heart can be transformative.
10. Exit with Grace and Integrity.
If you decide to leave a role or relationship, do so responsibly. Finish what you can, hand over effectively, and leave bridges intact. Integrity in how you exit reflects your character and sets you up for what’s next.
